Why not power of computers with hard drive connected?

I have a drive of 160 GB Seagate hard drive. When connected to my computer nothing happens. Well, actually, the fan turns a little, and the power light flashes, but the computer will not turn on. If I take it out and try another unit, it works well. I bought on Ebay and the seller is saying that fried the drive by inserting the wires in the wrong way. I do not see how he could have done this. The power cord is only going in one direction and the cable from the motherboard has a groove in it for what can only be inserted one way. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I have installed hard drives before without problems.

Hello. Any hard drive works if PSU can give enough power. Tell your eBay seller that has for a PSU and you know the power and data cables in one direction only. Try booting with the power cord disconnected from this unit (assuming you have another with your operating system installed). If this works then the drive may be bad. Are you sure IDE vs SATA connections, of course.
